Signy Research Station is one of Britain’s smallest stations, and is only occupied in summer. The island’s abundant wildlife and greenery make it an ideal outdoor laboratory. Research at Signy focuses on its bird populations and terrestrial ecology. Base in Signy Island In 1946–47 Britain established a meteorological station, Base H, at Factory Cove, site of Signy Island's old whaling station. Its successor, Signy Research Station, has since expanded its program to include biological studies. The island of Signy was first named on a chart in 1912 and by 1945 the precursor to the British Antarctic Survey was actively looking for somewhere to site a base in the South Orkney islands.

There was briefly a hut at Cape Geddes on nearby Laurie Island before the Signy Research Station was built in 1947. Scientific research began on Signy Island in 1947 when a three-man team occupied a site in Factory Cove above the old whaling station. The base they established was called Signy Island, known as Signy from Aug 1977.
